If you're looking for a really simple way to improve your picture taking ability immediately, it's as easy as turning off your flash whenever possible.
You may already have heard this basic nugget of information, but you might not realize just how much of an improvement using natural light makes, so I took two pictures with a very simple consumer grade (not fancy) DSLR camera to show you a comparison. These pictures were taken at the same distance with everything being the same on the auto setting, except I turned the dial to no flash in the second picture:
Notice that the flash makes the background dark even though there was plenty of sunshine filtering through the curtain. These pictures are both straight out of the camera, so all the differences you see are caused because of flash.Oh, and I think my daughter might have been hanging on for dear life in the first picture because the tips of her fingertips look like all circulation has been cut off! But other than that...the other part of her hand is actually washed out directly from the harsh flash and not from lack of blood flow.
So, start looking for the places inside your house that have the best natural light and then experiment with (and fully embrace) taking pictures with no flash. Pay attention to the time of day when you get the best pictures in certain spots inside your house, and how far away you can get from the natural light and still get good, sharp results. I'll talk about using flash in future tips, but for now just try turning off that flash as much as possible and see what happens.
Just a side note, whenever I give helpful parent tips, I'll usually use the Nikon D40 because if you have your own DSLR, yours is probably equivalent or BETTER, so the examples I use will be realistic and SIMPLE...you can easily get similar results using your own DSLR. And if you don't have a DSLR, I strongly urge you to get one....Mother's Day is fast approaching, ya know!
Happy Snapping! -Sharon :)
